Lippan Art: What It Is, Why the Mirrors Are There, and How It's Made

Lippan art is a traditional mud-relief and mirror-inlay craft from the Kutch region of Gujarat, India. Coils of clay are shaped by hand into raised patterns on a surface, then small mirrors called abhla are pressed in while the clay is still soft. What is Lippan art?

Two things make a Lippan piece, and separating them makes the whole craft easy to understand.

The clay relief. Damp clay is rolled between the palms into long thin ropes, then laid down in curves, spirals, dots and grids. The pattern stands proud of the surface, usually two to five millimetres. Nothing is painted on — everything is built up.

The mirror inlay. Small mirrors go in before the clay hardens, each one ringed with a fine rim of clay so its edges are gripped as the piece dries. That rim is small and easy to skip, and it is the whole difference between mirrors that hold for twenty years and mirrors that drop out in a season.

The result behaves differently depending on where you stand. The ridges throw shadow, the mirrors throw light, and the panel seems to shift as you walk past it. That movement is the point of the craft, and it is the one thing a printed reproduction can never fake.

What the name means

Lippan comes from the Gujarati verb lipnu — to plaster, to smear, to coat a surface. It describes household maintenance, not art, which tells you exactly how the craft began. Kaam means work.

In English it is called mud mirror work or clay relief mirror art. You will also see Chittar Kaam, a regional name for the same practice. Abhla is the word for the mirrors themselves.

Where Lippan art comes from

Kutch is desert. Hot, dry, dusty, and prone to earthquakes. For centuries its pastoral communities built homes from what the ground gave them — clay soil, dung, lime, straw — in a form called the bhunga: circular, thick-walled, few and small windows. The round plan holds up in seismic shock and the wall mass keeps the inside cool through summers well past 45°C.

Coating those interior walls was ordinary seasonal maintenance, not decoration. Fresh plaster closed the hairline cracks that heat opens, insulated the room and kept insects down.

The art came out of the chore. Rather than smoothing the plaster flat, women shaped it into pattern as they worked, and pressed reflective flakes into it. Nobody wrote the date down — folk traditions rarely are documented — but the practice runs back centuries, and some accounts connect the relief technique to the Kumbhar potter communities of Sindh, who used a similar language of coils and applied shapes on vessels before it reached house walls.

Why mirrors?

The mirrors solved an actual problem. A bhunga has thick walls and small openings — exactly what keeps it cool, and exactly what makes it dark. Before electricity, the light was one oil lamp. Dozens of small mirrors set into the walls caught that flame and threw it back, turning one weak source into a workable glow.

The earliest pieces used flakes of mica split from local stone. Cut glass came later; machine-cut acrylic later still.

Running alongside the practical use was a protective one — reflective surfaces were widely held to turn away the evil eye, so a mirrored wall doubled as a blessing on the house. Useful and auspicious together, which is why the mirror is structural to Lippan rather than decorative.

Motifs and what they carry

The imagery comes from the immediate world of the people who made it. Camels and cattle because they herded them. Peacocks because they were there. Water pots because fetching water shaped the day.

Look at enough pieces and the regional hands separate out. Rabari work runs loose and improvised, drawn from memory with nothing sketched beneath it. Mutwa work — from a community also known for extremely fine mirror embroidery — runs smaller, tighter, more strictly symmetrical. Both are Lippan. The difference in touch tells you which village you are looking at.

The dung puts people off, and it shouldn't. It is not a compromise — it is a genuinely good material. Dried and mixed in, it is fibre, and fibre is what stops clay shrinking apart as water leaves it. Same principle as straw in cob walls or horsehair in lime plaster.

Sourcing in Bangalore. Most of this is available from art and stationery suppliers around Gandhi Bazaar and Commercial Street, and from craft stores in the Sarjapur and Electronic City stretch. MDF cut to size is cheapest from a local carpenter or plywood shop rather than an art store. Ready-made Lippan kits are convenient for a first attempt, but buying components separately works out cheaper from the second panel onward.

One material tip that saves a first panel: buy more clay than the design looks like it needs. Beginners roll coils too thick, run short halfway through a border, and end up with a visible change in scale where the second batch begins.

How a Lippan panel is made

Six steps. Quick to describe, slow to master, because all the skill lives in the fingers.

Prepare the base. Sand the board and paint it a dark colour — pale relief reads far better against dark. On a wall, smooth and prime the patch first.
Set out the design. Experienced artisans work freehand. Beginners should pencil the outer border and the central motif, then improvise the filler.
Roll the clay. Knead until there are no air pockets, then roll thin, even ropes between your palms. Even thickness matters more here than anything else.
Build the relief. Press the ropes along your lines, joining and smoothing as you go, then add dots, beads and teardrops for texture.
Set the mirrors. While the clay is soft, press each mirror in and draw a fine clay rim around its edge to lock it.
Dry, then finish. Cure 12 to 48 hours depending on thickness. Then leave it in natural earth tones, or paint and varnish.

What actually goes wrong for beginners

Most guides stop at the six steps. The gap between following them and getting a panel you want to hang is entirely in the following, and every one of these is fixable.

Uneven coils. The single most common problem. Rolling with the fingertips gives you a rope that is fat in the middle and thin at the ends. Use the flat of the palm and roll from the centre outward.
Working too large an area. Clay skins over faster than people expect. If you lay out an entire border before placing any mirrors, the surface will have set and the mirrors won't bond. Work in sections and set the mirrors as you go.
Skipping the rim around each mirror. Pressing a mirror flat into clay is not enough. Without a raised clay edge holding it, it will come loose.
Too much water. Wetting the clay to make it easier to shape means more shrinkage as it dries, which means cracks.
Rushing the drying. A panel that feels dry on the surface is often still wet underneath. Painting or varnishing at that point traps moisture and lifts the paint later.
Overcrowding the design. Beginners fill every gap. Lippan needs negative space — the dark base showing through is what makes the white relief read.

Is Lippan art good for children?

It works well from roughly age eight upward, and it earns its place in a children's art programme for reasons beyond the finished object.

It builds fine motor control. Rolling even coils and placing small mirrors is precise work that rewards steady hands.
Mistakes are reversible. Soft clay lifts off and goes back on. For a child anxious about spoiling their work, that is a very different experience from paint on paper.
The result is three-dimensional. Children who don't think of themselves as good at drawing often do well here, because the craft rewards patience rather than draughtsmanship.
It holds attention. The repetition is absorbing in the way that beadwork or clay modelling is absorbing.

Two things need adult supervision: glass mirrors should be swapped for acrylic with younger children, and varnishing is a step for an adult to handle. Our kids art classes use acrylic mirrors throughout for exactly this reason.

Caring for a finished panel

Dust with a dry soft brush or microfibre cloth. Never wet.
Keep away from damp walls, bathrooms and direct water.
Avoid strong direct sun, which fades acrylic over time.
Re-fix a loose mirror with a dab of clear adhesive.
Lift by the frame or edges, not the relief, which chips.
Indoor use only, unless specifically sealed for outdoors.

A note for Bangalore homes: the monsoon matters here. Panels hung on an external-facing wall that draws damp will soften and lift over a few seasons. Choose an internal wall, and if a wall is known to sweat, leave a small air gap behind the frame rather than mounting flush.
